Hurghada airport (HRG) to Orange Bay, the logistics guide

Where Hurghada airport actually is

Hurghada International Airport (IATA code HRG) sits 5 km south-west of the central Hurghada beachfront. It is the only commercial airport on the central Red Sea coast and is the main arrival point for nearly all Orange Bay visitors.

Driving distance from HRG to the main hotel zones: 15 minutes to Sakkala, 20 minutes to the Marina, 25 minutes to Sahl Hasheesh, 30 to 40 minutes to El Gouna in the north, 45 minutes to Makadi Bay in the south.

Getting from HRG to your hotel

Hotel transfer (most reliable): €15 to €30 each way depending on hotel zone. Pre-book through your hotel, your tour operator, or Uber-style apps. Travel time matches the driving distance above. Most 4 and 5-star hotels offer free transfer if you stay 5+ nights.

Taxi from the airport rank: cheaper (€8 to €20 official) but you must negotiate the fare BEFORE getting in. Drivers will try to start at €30 to €40. Use a metered taxi if available.

Public bus: cheapest at €0.50 but slow and limited. Not recommended with luggage or after a long flight.

Rental car: makes sense only if you plan to drive to Luxor or other multi-stop trips. For a beach + Orange Bay holiday, hotel transfer + tour pickups is cheaper.

Can I do Orange Bay on arrival day?

Technically yes if your flight lands before 6 AM. Realistically no for most schedules.

The Orange Bay shared boat pickup is around 8 AM at your hotel. So you need to land, clear immigration (45 to 60 minutes peak), pick up bags, transfer to hotel, check in, change into swimwear, and be in the hotel lobby by 7:45 AM. That maps to a flight landing by 6 AM, not before.

Speedboat morning slot (pickup 8:30 AM) works with a flight landing by 6:30 AM. The afternoon speedboat slot (pickup 12:30 PM) is the most realistic same-day option, lands by 10 AM works.

Our recommendation: rest day 1 (nap, pool, dinner) and book Orange Bay for day 2 or 3 when you are rested. You will enjoy the day infinitely more.

A typical 4 day Hurghada Orange Bay itinerary

Day 1: Arrive, transfer, check in, rest. Optional sunset walk on the Marina Boulevard. Dinner.

Day 2: Orange Bay shared boat (€25 per person). Hotel pickup 8 AM, back at the hotel around 4 PM. Pool / dinner in the evening.

Day 3: Desert safari afternoon or a sunset boat cruise, or beach day at the hotel.

Day 4: Speedboat to Orange Bay with Dolphin House detour (€130 flat for the whole boat), or check out and transfer back to HRG.

Tips for the airport day

Egypt requires a tourist visa for most nationalities. Available on arrival at HRG for €25 (USD 25) cash. Carry small bills.

No SIM card hassle: 1 GB tourist SIMs (Vodafone or Orange Egypt) cost €5 from the airport kiosk. Useful for WhatsApping us your hotel address.

Currency: USD and EUR are widely accepted in hotels and tour operators. The Egyptian Pound (EGP) is for local cafes / souks. ATM withdrawal works fine but cap is around 5000 EGP per transaction.

Bring summer clothes in your carry-on if you check a bag, just in case.
